O Sacred Head Now Wounded

We really like Jonathan Gibson’s liturgical devotionals for Christmas and “normal” days, and so bought the Easter one last year. But I found the schedule to be confusing and actually failed to start it on time, so, having learned from my mistake, I am more on top of it this year. Maybe this will help you, too.

The subtitle of the devotional is “A Liturgy for Daily Worship from Pascha to Pentecost”. Since “Pascha” is the passover and, in the Christian calendar, means Easter, I assumed last year that this devotional starts on Easter and ends on Pentecost, the celebration of the unveiling of the Holy Spirit recorded in Acts 2. That was actually one thing that attracted me to this work!

Alas, it is not so. It actually has 48 devotionals: Days 1-42, followed by Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Resurrection (Easter) Sunday, and then two more for Ascension Sunday (sixth Sunday after Resurrection Sunday) and Pentecost Sunday (seventh Sunday after Resurrection Sunday). Counting backwards, then, from Maundy Thursday, you’d have to start this devotional on the day after Ash Wednesday, which, this year, is Thursday, 6 March.

So, I hope you do better than I did last year, and start this one on time. Good luck!
